Not all who wander are lost - but I probably am

The thing about things

Sharon Wright May 28, 2019

Many of you know my story, how I started photography and learned by shooting dolls then that became a ‘thing’ and so I kept doing that thing for a long time.

It’s not that I don’t still do that thing, it’s just that now I am exploring, well, every thing!

I greatly love taking travel photos and exploring new places and basically documenting everything in pictures. It literally feeds my soul, I can’t really explain it, but it’s like bottling an emotion. Every time I see an image I took I instantly recall how I was feeling in that moment and it becomes alive.

But, here’s the thing, I like to shoot everything, literally EVERY THING! (just ask my husband when we try to go out somewhere - he’s a saint) but I’m not really ‘marketable’. I had one guy tell me that I was great at lots of things but he didn’t really know what my “style was” or what I was best at or how I could be marketed.
Hmm…..

Granted, I have not gone to any photography classes, or editing classes, I tend to just fumble my way through buttons and sliders until it resembles something I am pleased with. I also don’t read blogs telling me how to frame shots or whatever or look at lots of various Instagram accounts - I prefer to just develop myself and not try to copy others. I shoot a large variety of subjects and don’t really hone in on one thing…Maybe that’s what I do wrong, I don’t know.

So, I really do think I am wandering lost at this point. I think I should shoot more people, but then you get all the people problems. Most of the models out here in Los Angeles are all wannabe actresses. Or want to be Insta-famous. They don’t show up on time, or at all. They spend most of the time on their phones and are SOOO nit picky - and let me tell you , my nit picky filter is virtually non-existent. I’m like my husband - don’t give me notes, just let me do my thing and you sit back and enjoy the result….maybe it’s not be the best route for me. LOL.

Don’t get me wrong, I would love to shoot more people/lifestyle/fashion stuff - hence why I shoot myself so often. And, honestly, I would love to shoot hazy cinematic nudes and dramatic edgy stuff but I don’t really know how to go about asking someone to get naked for me without it being weird and creepy. And where would I even shoot and I feel weird just typing all this, so yeah….forget all those words I just wrote…
See, I really I do love people shots, just with 90% less bullshit.

I love doing behind the scenes shoots, and I do think fashion shows would be fun (especially if I could shoot the BTS at a fashion show!) and I love red carpet shoots.

sigh…

Ultimately though, I greatly enjoy taking images of things more than I do people but it’s hard to find people who want random thing shots, lol. Not a lot of posts on Craigslist looking for thing shooters. Dammit.

Anyway, I’m rambling. Welcome to my new page and my crazy ass thought vomits. I am pleased you have read this far. If you were here I’d give you a ((hug))

If you have words of advice, or encouragement about how to put myself out there I’d love to hear them - but don’t tell me how to shoot….remember, I don’t do network notes ;)

<3

EDIT - well screw me - I ask for advice but don’t seem to know how to add a "COMMENTS SECTION…..fml
I’ll work on that, of course you’ll forget about this post and I’ll get no advice, which is fine because I probably wouldn’t have listened anyway so maybe I’m saving us all the time ;) LOL!
